By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance,
obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
Faith is the only way to arrive at the place where God has called you, since the destination is never revealed at the outset of the journey.
Only through faith can you submit to the kind of radical obedience that says “yes” to plans you don’t understand and “no” to ones that seem so logical. For Abraham, it would have been quite rational to live out his life in the land where he was, a place that was familiar and comfortable. However, God did not call Abraham to a life of predictability; He called him to a life of uncertainty that began with uprooting his family and heading out to an unknown destination. Only there would he find his God-ordained purpose and fulfill the destiny to which he was called, one that would result in a great blessing upon the entire world.
Our lives of purpose begin with that same step of faith that requires us to set aside logic and journey to the places we would never venture to on our own. There, God will train us to rely completely on Him as we face our own weaknesses and walk toward the unknown. As He leads us away from our own self-reliance and into a place of total trust in Him, He leads us closer to becoming the person He has destined us to be. He designed each of us to glorify His name and become a blessing to those around us, just as He did through Abraham. And just like this man of great faith, we must listen to and obey the One who calls us, shutting out the other voices that try to dissuade us from following Him.
People will undoubtedly question our logic and even criticize or mock us as we journey down a road led by an unseen guide. However, the beauty of faith is that it empowers us to stop listening to the multitude of voices that tell us the path we are taking is foolish and illogical. It quenches our desire to please everyone around us and instead emboldens our hearts to love and please only Him. With God, we are free to follow the voice of the One whose understanding has no limit (Psalm 147:5) and whose ways are vastly higher than our own (Isaiah 55:9). Only with a God like this can we step out in complete, unyielding faith!

Jill Holler grew up on a farm in western Illinois, enjoying a life of running free through the pastures during the day and gazing at the countless shimmering stars at night. All around her, she could see the work of God’s creative hand, and she knew He was real. Yet it wasn’t until years later that she would discover the abundant life of faith that comes from taking hold of the living power that resides in God and His word. After struggling to find purpose and meaning for much of her young adult life, she found that it resides simply–yet powerfully–in Jesus Christ, her God and Savior.
