He said, “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 2 Kings 6:16

As Christians, we do not always embrace the command, “Do not be afraid.” Instead, we feel quite the opposite: we feel afraid because we feel outnumbered. We look at our own communities and notice that only a fraction of our neighbors and friends claim allegiance to Christ. We turn on the world news to see the rise of evil people who proclaim their hatred of Christianity and anyone who supports it. From a numbers perspective, we see ourselves as the underdog who must take on a much larger beast. Like the servant of Elisha, we may anxiously proclaim, Oh no, my lord! What shall we do? (2 Kings 6:15).

The problem with this perspective, however, is that we are focusing only on the numbers we can see, and they are merely human numbers. Do we not believe that God has vastly supreme spiritual armies that are exceedingly greater than the forces of this world? The God who stands by our side is the one who thunders at the head of His army with forces that are beyond number (Joel 2:11). His legions are uncompromising in their purpose and unstoppable in the face of evil: they charge like warriors; they scale walls like soldiers. They all march in line, not swerving from their course (Joel 2:7). Whom shall we fear if this is the army of God?

As Elisha prayed for his servant, we too can pray this for ourselves: open [our] eyes, Lord, that [we] may see (2 Kings 6:17) the heavenly forces that are on our side. As we become aware of the power that surrounds us, we can let go of our fear and instead fix our eyes on the security we have in God Almighty. We do not have to hide in the darkness of anxiety when God desires for us to go forth as light into the world. We are His hands and feet on this earth, and we must go where He needs us: into the places of our communities and world where the light is dim. We may have to face some earthly giants and come up against those who side with the enemy, but as we step forward with purpose, we know that the greatest forces of good are on our side.

Jill Holler grew up on a farm in western Illinois, enjoying a life of running free through the pastures during the day and gazing at the countless shimmering stars at night. All around her, she could see the work of God’s creative hand, and she knew He was real. Yet it wasn’t until years later that she would discover the abundant life of faith that comes from taking hold of the living power that resides in God and His word. After struggling to find purpose and meaning for much of her young adult life, she found that it resides simply–yet powerfully–in Jesus Christ, her God and Savior.
