INTO THE HARVEST FIELD

Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.
Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.”
Matthew 9:37-38

Jesus personally asked His disciples to pray for workers He could send out into the harvest field. Has God appointed you as an answer to their prayers in this generation? Have you been called to go out into the fields, which are ripe for harvest and harvest a crop for eternal life (John 4:35-36)? God could give no greater calling on your life than to participate in the harvest work for the redemption of souls. Around us is a vast sea of people living harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd (John 4:36), and they are longing for hope. We know the answer: Jesus Christ. Are we willing to share it so that they may reap eternal life?

As believers, we did not spontaneously come to know Christ. Instead, we reaped what other Christians sowed before us. We gained eternal rewards from the work God called them to in their generations. In essence, Others have done the hard work, and [we] have reaped the benefits of their labor (John 4:38). Will we answer the call from God to do the same for others? Our Savior calls for harvest workers, for the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. As Christians, we are qualified to go forth into the fields, for we have been saved through grace by Jesus Christ in His harvest field. Therefore, let us contribute with honor to the work from which we ourselves have been saved!

God weaves such an amazing, complex mystery throughout the generations of His people as He calls us individually, yet collectively, to contribute to the work of His redemption story. He creates plans that span infinitely across time, forging the work of past believers with those of the present and future. And at the center of it all is Jesus Christ, by whom we are sent out to gather in the harvest. As believers in this current age, we are the people whom God works through to carry out His great plan. We cannot leave it for the next generation, for what we do today will be vital to what they do tomorrow. Therefore, let us be a harvest blessing to the Lord in our time on this earth, so that God’s gift of eternal life may multiply throughout the generations.

Jill Holler grew up on a farm in western Illinois, enjoying a life of running free through the pastures during the day and gazing at the countless shimmering stars at night. All around her, she could see the work of God’s creative hand, and she knew He was real. Yet it wasn’t until years later that she would discover the abundant life of faith that comes from taking hold of the living power that resides in God and His word. After struggling to find purpose and meaning for much of her young adult life, she found that it resides simply–yet powerfully–in Jesus Christ, her God and Savior.
