Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat.
But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke Him, saying,
“Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
Matthew 8:24-25

The darkest days of our lives are like the storm on the sea. We feel like we’ve run out of hope, like there is no way out of the darkness. We panic and cry out, “Lord, save us!” in the midst of our fear, hoping He will do something to rescue us. But still we feel afraid because hidden beneath our cries is the haunting thought that He just might not come through. We hope, but not with confidence. We turn to Him, but only in despair, like those grasping blindly for a lifeline. Just like the disciples on the boat, we do not fully comprehend the power of the One who is with us out on those stormy seas.

On the boat, Jesus asked His disciples a question that speaks to our own hearts: Why are you afraid, O you of little faith? (Matthew 8:26). This question stings our souls because we long for great faith. However, when the waves come crashing around us and swamp the boat we are sitting in, we watch in panic as the water rises around us, and we give into fear. We cry out to Jesus for help, but only with logic ruling our minds and doubt piercing our hearts. In our desperation, we reason, “How could God possibly help me in this situation?” Oh, what a foolish question to ask! And it stems from the fact that we do not fully understand the power of the One who is with us.

The One who is with us is Jesus, the all-powerful creator of the universe, the Lamb of God who overcame death, and the One who controls the forces of nature with just the sound of His voice. This great power is with us as believers in Christ. But we cannot be strengthened by it if we don’t believe in it. And we can’t have unshakeable faith in God if we view Him only within the scope of our limited human minds. Therefore, let us see God for who He truly is: the One who has the power to take even the most impossible situations and turn them around for our good and His glory. When we ground ourselves in the truth of who God is, what great victory we can have over the power of our fears!

Jill Holler grew up on a farm in western Illinois, enjoying a life of running free through the pastures during the day and gazing at the countless shimmering stars at night. All around her, she could see the work of God’s creative hand, and she knew He was real. Yet it wasn’t until years later that she would discover the abundant life of faith that comes from taking hold of the living power that resides in God and His word. After struggling to find purpose and meaning for much of her young adult life, she found that it resides simply–yet powerfully–in Jesus Christ, her God and Savior.
