Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me.
Let God teach you to rely solely on Him. Your human nature drives you to seek out other people to support and comfort you, yet their responses usually disappoint. You may question why the people you love cannot be everything you need them to be. But in all things, God has a purpose. Perhaps by displaying their limitations to you, God is trying to draw you closer to Him. God is good, and even when we feel the emptiness of imperfect human relationships, He is waiting to fill us with a love that will never fail and to build a relationship with us that will surpass anything we could ask for.
God is our refuge, the One to which [we] can always go (Psalm 71:3). He is our strong tower in the midst of the storms of life, the One we can cling to without the fear of rejection or indifference. People may be imperfect in giving love, but God is not. In the comfort of His shelter, we are free to be ourselves because His love is unconditional and His faithfulness is unmatched. No one on earth can be what He is. And inside each of us is a longing for something higher than what our own human relationships can supply. Our hearts call out to God, just as David’s heart did: From the ends of the earth I call to You, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I (Psalm 61:2).
Let us call out to God with our desperate, yearning hearts so that we may lean on the trusted rock of our salvation. What peace we will find as we place our lives in His hands, instead of the hands of those around us. As we bask in the perfection of God’s love, we are able to release the people in our lives from supplying all of our emotional needs. We allow them to be imperfect, just as we are, and we can shower them with mercy instead of judgment. The habit of looking to God alone for our sustenance brings freedom, for we are no longer tied to the yoke of others, nor are they tied to ours. Christ died to set us free—free to rely solely upon Him.

How does God sustain you in your time of weakness?

Jill Holler grew up on a farm in western Illinois, enjoying a life of running free through the pastures during the day and gazing at the countless shimmering stars at night. All around her, she could see the work of God’s creative hand, and she knew He was real. Yet it wasn’t until years later that she would discover the abundant life of faith that comes from taking hold of the living power that resides in God and His word. After struggling to find purpose and meaning for much of her young adult life, she found that it resides simply–yet powerfully–in Jesus Christ, her God and Savior.
